Password Protect PDF encrypts a PDF so it only opens with a password — for contracts, tax returns, medical records or anything you would not want forwarded. Encryption runs locally with the bundled engine; the document and password never leave your device.
You can also set a separate owner password and combine this with Set Permissions to block printing, copying or editing while still letting people open the file.
How To Use Password Protect Offline
- Open Password Protect — Under PDF Tools, or search "password" with ⌘/Ctrl+K.
- Drop your PDF — Drag the file in. A password prompt asks for the open password.
- Set the password(s) — Choose a user password — required to open the file. Optionally set a different owner password that controls permissions.
- Process — The encrypted PDF is written to your output folder. Test it by opening — it should prompt for the password.

Good to know
- Replace source is ON by default — protecting in place overwrites the unprotected original. Turn it off in Settings › General to keep both.
- A forgotten password cannot be recovered — store it in a password manager.

- Pair with Set Permissions to allow opening but block printing or copying.
- Send the PDF and password via different channels — never in the same message.

What encryption does it use?
